Description
Lifestream Advanced Digestive Enzymes is a plant and microbial sourced enzyme blend in a vegetarian capsule, with seven enzymes in one capsule instead of spread across several products. Amylase, protease and lipase are the three enzyme classes that act on starch, protein and fat in ordinary digestion; tilactase is the enzyme that acts on lactose, cellulase acts on plant fibre, and bromelain and papain are protein acting enzymes drawn from pineapple and papaya. Activity is declared in the units the enzyme trade uses, DU, HUT, LipU, ALU and CU, rather than in milligrams alone. It is taken with food, one or two capsules at a meal, for people who prefer to take an enzyme blend alongside what they eat rather than as a separate step between meals.
Product Strengths
- Taken with a meal, one or two capsules, so it fits an existing eating routine rather than adding a between meals step.
- Seven enzymes in a single capsule instead of several separate products.
- Vegetarian and vegan suitable: the enzymes are plant and microbial sourced and the shell is hypromellose.
- Activity is declared per capsule in enzyme units, with milligram figures for bromelain and papain.
- 60 vegetarian capsules per pack.

Digestive Enzyme
What do digestive enzymes do?
Digestive enzymes help break down a big meal: protease, amylase and lipase break down protein, starch and fat. A blend covers a mixed plate, so take it with your meal and it can get to work on your food.

Common questions
Should I take digestive enzymes before, with or after food?
With the meal, or just before it. Enzymes work on the food in your gut, not in your bloodstream, so if the food has moved on, the enzyme has missed it. Lipase especially needs to arrive with the fat, with bile present, to do its job.
Is this the same as the enzymes my doctor prescribes?
No, and you can't swap one for the other. Prescription pancreatic enzymes are prescription-only (Schedule 4) medicines from animals, with a protective coating, dosed at 25,000 to 40,000 lipase units per meal for diagnosed pancreatic failure. The over-the-counter enzymes here come from fungi, are capped at 20,000 lipase units per dose unit, and are made for everyday digestive comfort. Never swap one for the other without your prescriber.
Do digestive enzymes help with bloating and wind?
Relief of bloating and wind are permitted claims for enzyme products in Australia, and lactase has a clear way of working for dairy-related wind. But we haven't found a trial of an enzyme blend for bloating or fullness, so it's fair to call it worth trying rather than proven. If bloating is ongoing, new or comes with weight loss, get it checked first.
