What does krill oil do?
Krill oil gives you EPA and DHA on phospholipids, a form your body takes up readily, and it's been trialled for mild knee aches and stiffness. Smaller capsules mean less of the fishy repeat.

Is this the right omega-3 for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Is krill oil better than fish oil?
It's better absorbed, on the measurements we have. In a 12-week trial at a matched 1.1 g omega-3 dose, krill raised blood EPA and DHA about 1.5 times as much as fish oil. What no one has shown is that the higher blood level makes you feel any different, because no trial has compared how people actually do on the two forms. Krill capsules also contain less omega-3 each, so for a general daily dose, fish oil is usually the simpler way to get there.
I'm allergic to shellfish. Can I take krill oil?
No. Krill is a crustacean, and Australia's permitted ingredients list doesn't require an allergen warning for it, so you can't count on the pack to tell you. Algal oil is the clean alternative. It's grown from microalgae, contains no fish or shellfish at all, and it's the only vegan source of EPA and DHA. If you've only ever reacted to molluscs such as mussels or oysters rather than crustaceans, it's still a question for your doctor before you try it.
How much krill oil should I take for my knees?
Both krill trials behind this page used 4 g of oil a day, which is several capsules of most Australian products rather than one. The six-month study in 235 adults with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis improved pain, stiffness and physical function compared with placebo, although the change in pain was small, about 5 points on a 100-point scale. Follow the directions on the product you buy, give it months rather than weeks, and talk to one of our naturopaths about how it fits with everything else you take.
