Ascorbic Acid
What is ascorbic acid?
Ascorbic acid is the plainest form of vitamin C, pure and simple with nothing added. Your skin, bones and blood vessels all need vitamin C, and taking it with food or splitting it across the day is the most comfortable way.

Is this the right vitamin c for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Is ascorbic acid the same thing as vitamin C?
Yes. Ascorbic acid is vitamin C in its plain acid form, and it's the form the Australian recommended intakes are measured in. Buffered products such as sodium ascorbate and calcium ascorbate are salts of the same molecule, and their labels convert back to an ascorbic acid equivalent so you can compare the amounts.
Why does ascorbic acid upset some people's stomachs?
Because it's genuinely acidic. A 5% solution has a pH of 2.2 to 2.5. Neutralised with sodium, the same solution rises to pH 5.5 to 7.0, which is what buffered forms are for. Separately, large doses of any form can cause cramps and loose bowels, because unabsorbed vitamin C draws water into your gut.
Should I choose ascorbic acid powder or vitamin C tablets?
Powder is the form most people choose when they take gram-level amounts, because one tub holds many doses. To compare products fairly, look at the tub size and the milligrams of vitamin C per serve, and talk to us about which form suits you.
