Lactoferrin
What is lactoferrin?
Lactoferrin is a natural iron-binding protein from cow's milk that supports healthy haemoglobin. In trials that compared it with iron tablets, it was easier on the gut.

How the forms compare
Common questions
Can I take lactoferrin instead of my iron tablets?
That's a decision for whoever prescribed them, and here's why it isn't a straight swap. Two reviews found lactoferrin by mouth did better than ferrous sulfate on haemoglobin, serum iron and ferritin, and the head-to-head trials reported fewer side effects. But those trials were mostly in children with specific conditions, the results varied a lot between studies, and a Cochrane overview of anaemia treatments doesn't list lactoferrin among the established ones. Iron treatment needs monitoring with blood tests, so take the question back to your doctor or pharmacist.
Will lactoferrin stop me getting colds?
Not on current evidence, if you're an adult. A review of 25 studies found fewer chest and nose infections in babies and children (odds ratio 0.78), but no change at all in adults (odds ratio 1.00, with a confidence interval of 0.76 to 1.32). A separate review of 25 trials in children found no significant effect on upper respiratory infections, even in children. In adults, the immune finding was a drop in one inflammation marker, IL-6, while CRP and natural killer cell activity didn't change.
Is lactoferrin dairy, and can I take it if I'm allergic to milk?
It's dairy, and no, you shouldn't. Lactoferrin in supplements is bovine lactoferrin, purified from cheese whey or skim milk, so it's a cow's milk protein and is declared as one. No lactoferrin product should ever be described as dairy free or suitable for a milk allergy, and that's the most likely real-world risk on this page. It isn't vegan either. If you're unsure whether something contains it, look for bovine lactoferrin or colostrum on the label, or ask us.
