Ester-C
What is Ester-C?
Ester-C is a gentle, non-acidic, buffered vitamin C, and it's the one buffered form tested head to head for stomach comfort. Your immune system needs vitamin C, and if plain vitamin C feels sharp going down, it's the one to try.

Is this the right vitamin c for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Is Ester-C gentler on the stomach than regular vitamin C?
In the one trial that tested it, yes. Fifty people who were sensitive to acidic foods took 1,000 mg of each form for 3 days. Ester-C caused 33 stomach complaints compared with 55 for plain ascorbic acid, and 72% rated it very good compared with 54%. It was a small, short trial in a hand-picked group, so it may not hold for everyone.
Does Ester-C stay in your body longer?
Partly. In a trial of 15 healthy men, Ester-C left more vitamin C in white blood cells 24 hours after a 1,000 mg dose than ascorbic acid did, but blood plasma levels were no different. The authors called it preliminary, and a 2025 review found no study that measured how much vitamin C stays in your tissues.
What's the difference between Ester-C and calcium ascorbate?
Ester-C is calcium ascorbate with vitamin C metabolites added, mainly calcium threonate. Both are buffered and non-acidic. The difference is the research: Ester-C has a stomach comfort trial and a white blood cell trial behind it, while plain calcium ascorbate doesn't. Plain calcium ascorbate is mostly sold as a powder.
