What do prebiotics do?
Prebiotic fibre feeds the good bacteria already living in your gut. Take it for four weeks and your bifidobacteria, one of the main groups of good bacteria, increase. Choose the fibre that sits most comfortably with you.

How the forms compare
Common questions
What's the difference between a probiotic and a prebiotic?
Probiotics are live bacteria you swallow. Prebiotics are fibre your own enzymes can't break down, so it reaches your large bowel whole and the bacteria already living there ferment it. A prebiotic feeds what you already have rather than adding anything new, which is also why it doesn't need to survive stomach acid. It isn't alive in the first place.
Why does prebiotic fibre make me bloated?
Because fermentation makes gas, and fermentation is how it works. The effect depends on the dose and usually settles: a review of these fibres describes tummy discomfort, wind and diarrhoea at higher intakes as temporary. Shorter fibres like FOS ferment fastest and make the most gas. Acacia gum and partially hydrolysed guar gum ferment slowest, and psyllium adds bulk more than it ferments.
I have IBS. Should I take a prebiotic?
Talk to your practitioner before you do. Inulin, FOS and GOS are fermentable oligosaccharides, the O in FODMAP, so for anyone on a low FODMAP diet they're the fibres being deliberately cut back. One large review comparing treatments found probiotics helped, while prebiotics and synbiotics didn't show a significant improvement, and a separate review found the prebiotic evidence limited.
