Saffron
What is saffron extract used for?
People choose saffron extract to support a healthy mood balance when they've been feeling a bit flat. It's a measured extract of the saffron flower, not the spice in your pantry.

Is Saffron right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
How much saffron do I need to take?
For mood, the research used 28 to 30 mg a day of a standardised extract. In one trial that tested both doses side by side, 28 mg worked and 22 mg didn't, so it's worth checking the label. Sleep trials used 14 to 30 mg in the evening and found the lower doses worked about as well.
Is the saffron in my kitchen the same thing?
It's the same plant, but you get very different amounts. Cooking uses a few threads now and then, while the trials used a measured, standardised extract every day for weeks. There's no reliable way to turn a pinch of threads into a trial dose, and in Australia cooking saffron is sold as a food, with no health claim.
Can I take saffron with my antidepressant?
Ask your doctor or pharmacist first. The trials that compared saffron with antidepressants replaced the medicine under medical supervision. They didn't add saffron on top, and no formal interaction study exists. Please don't stop or swap a prescribed medicine for saffron on your own. That decision belongs with the doctor who prescribed it.
