Green Tea
What is green tea?
Green tea is the everyday leaf most Australians already enjoy, rich in catechins, with EGCG the best known, plus a gentle lift of caffeine. Sip it as tea, or choose a concentrated extract.

Is Green Tea right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Is green tea extract bad for your liver?
Liver injury from green tea extract is rare, but it's real and well documented, with more than a hundred published cases. Australian oral medicines containing Camellia sinensis must carry a warning about it, unless the product is a water-based (aqueous) extract giving 300 milligrams or less of EGCG a day. The products involved are concentrated tablets, not cups of tea.
How much EGCG is in a cup of green tea versus a supplement?
A 250 millilitre cup gives you roughly 50 to 100 milligrams of total catechins, and EGCG is the largest part. European estimates put the average intake from tea at 90 to 300 milligrams of EGCG a day. A single concentrated tablet can give you several hundred milligrams on its own, and that's the key difference.
Does green tea help with weight loss?
The combined evidence doesn't support it. A Cochrane review of eighteen trials in 1,945 adults found green tea products led to a small weight change that wasn't statistically significant, and no effect on keeping weight off. In six studies outside Asia, the average difference was 0.04 kilograms. Green tea is a lovely drink, but it isn't a weight solution.
How much caffeine is in green tea?
About 30 to 40 milligrams in a 250 millilitre cup, roughly half as much as a cup of instant coffee. Matcha gives you more per gram because you drink the whole leaf. In Australia, any listed medicine containing Camellia sinensis must keep total caffeine to 400 milligrams a day and 100 milligrams in any three hours.
