What is glucosamine hydrochloride?
Glucosamine hydrochloride is the form in most combination joint products, usually paired with chondroitin. Taken with chondroitin, it eased joint symptoms more than placebo in trials for mild knee aches that drag on for months.

Is this the right glucosamine for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Is glucosamine hydrochloride as good as the sulfate?
Not on its own. An analysis of 15 trials put its effect size at 0.06, compared with 0.44 for the sulfate, and a 251-person trial found no significant benefit from hydrochloride alone. Paired with chondroitin, it's a different picture: a 606-person trial found the combination matched a common arthritis medicine for pain relief over six months.
Why does my glucosamine say hydrochloride and not sulfate?
It's a different form of the same amino sugar. Hydrochloride contains more glucosamine per gram, and it's the form most combination products use. The trade-off is that the evidence for it on its own is weaker than for the sulfate.
Can I take it if I'm allergic to shellfish?
Not the kind made from shellfish, which is most of it. Australian side effect reports for glucosamine and chondroitin were mostly allergic reactions, some of them severe. Corn-fermented glucosamine hydrochloride is the same molecule, made without shellfish.
