Inositol
What is inositol?
Inositol is part of how your cells respond to insulin, and myo-inositol is the form studied for a more regular cycle. Myo-inositol at four grams a day is the form and dose behind nearly all the research.

Is Inositol right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Myo-inositol or D-chiro-inositol. Which one do I actually want?
Myo-inositol, for almost everything. It's the form your body holds most of, the most common one in food, and the form nearly all the research used. D-chiro-inositol is made from myo-inositol in your body in small amounts, and it's dosed in milligrams rather than grams. More of it isn't better. In the ovary it works the opposite way to myo-inositol, raising androgen production and lowering aromatase, and the largest review of the research says D-chiro-inositol on its own should be used with caution.
Is the 40:1 combination better than plain myo-inositol?
That isn't settled, and it's fair to be sceptical. The 40:1 idea copies the ratio of the two forms in human blood, which makes sense in theory. The trial usually quoted for it gave each of seven different ratios to just eight women, which makes it a pilot rather than proof. A second trial found any advantage over myo-inositol alone had gone by six months, and a larger double-blind trial using about ten times more D-chiro-inositol did better on the outcomes it measured than the 40:1 group did. So 40:1 is a reasonable choice because it's the ratio the fertility trials used, but it isn't proven to be the best one.
Does inositol do anything for mood or anxiety? It's sold everywhere for that.
We can't make that claim, and the evidence doesn't support it either. A clinical guideline written by a 31-member international taskforce, which only counted high-quality evidence, lists inositol on its own as not recommended for depression, and a systematic review found no significant effect in bipolar disorder. The older trials people quote for panic and obsessive-compulsive symptoms aren't part of the evidence we've reviewed, so we don't quote them. If mood is the reason you're here, please talk to one of our naturopaths before you buy anything.
