Vitamin B12
What does vitamin B12 do?
B12 helps your body make red blood cells and keep your nerves working well. It's found almost only in animal foods, so it's a smart choice if you're vegan, vegetarian or an older adult.

Is Vitamin B12 right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Who is most at risk of low vitamin B12?
healthdirect lists older adults, people who eat a vegetarian or vegan diet, people taking metformin or a proton pump inhibitor, people with pernicious anaemia, and people who've had weight-loss surgery. The NIH adds that atrophic gastritis, which reduces absorption from food, affects eight to nine per cent of adults aged 65 and over.
Is methylcobalamin better than cyanocobalamin?
Not on current evidence. Methylcobalamin is one of the two active forms your body uses, so the idea makes sense, but the NIH says plainly that there's no evidence absorption differs by the form of B12 in supplements. It also reports no difference in how well tablets you swallow and under-the-tongue products work.
Should I get my vitamin B12 tested?
That's a chat to have with your doctor. healthdirect says the test is usually ordered for anaemia or an abnormal blood count, for symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, tiredness or nerve problems, for conditions that affect absorption, for vegan or vegetarian diets, and during pregnancy or breastfeeding. You'll need a referral and a visit to a pathology collection centre.
How much vitamin B12 do vegans need?
The Australian Recommended Dietary Intake is 2.4 micrograms a day for adults, 2.6 in pregnancy and 2.8 while breastfeeding. Because only animal foods provide it naturally, vegans need to get it from fortified foods or a supplement. Supplement doses are much larger than the requirement because only about one to two per cent of a large dose taken by mouth is absorbed.
