Echinacea
What is echinacea used for?
Echinacea is the herb people take to catch fewer colds. Choose one that names its species and plant part on the label, ideally the fresh aerial parts of E. purpurea, the best-studied form.

Is Echinacea right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does echinacea actually stop you getting a cold?
It tips the odds a little, but it doesn't make you immune. Three meta-analyses agree on the direction, one putting the risk of catching a cold at 0.78 compared with placebo. But Cochrane, which combined the most trials, found no single prevention comparison statistically significant and gave only an after-the-fact estimate of a 10 to 20 per cent lower risk. Even the authors who did find an effect said it's debatable whether it makes a real difference.
Why do echinacea studies disagree so much?
Because they aren't studying the same thing. One large negative trial used Echinacea angustifolia root, while the big positive prevention trial used a fresh-plant alcohol extract that's 95 per cent Echinacea purpurea aerial parts. Cochrane says plainly that products differ a lot because of different plant material, extraction methods and added ingredients, and a review of all three species found commercial samples are inconsistent. Combining those trials averages out different medicines. If the pack doesn't say which species and part it uses, you don't know what you've bought.
Can I give echinacea to my kids?
No, not under 12. A randomised trial in 407 children aged 2 to 11, covering 707 respiratory infections, found the same illness length of nine days in both groups and no difference in symptom severity, number of symptoms, fever length or parents' ratings. It also found rash in 7.1 per cent of children on echinacea compared with 2.7 per cent on placebo. European guidance limits these medicines to adults and teenagers over 12.
