What is curcumin used for?
Curcumin is turmeric's golden compound, concentrated from the root and taken to support mild joint aches and stiffness. Choose by the delivery form on the label, because that's what helps it reach your blood.

Is Curcumin right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Which curcumin is best absorbed?
Micellar forms show the biggest measured increase: one crossover trial found 185 times the absorption of plain powder. Phytosome forms measured 29 times higher in a study linked to the manufacturer and 7.9 times higher in an independent one. Piperine combinations are a simple, real upgrade. These figures come from different studies with different comparison doses, so use them as a ranking rather than exact maths.
Do you need black pepper with curcumin?
Piperine really does help. A 1998 human study paired 2 grams of curcumin with 20 milligrams of piperine and reported a 2,000 per cent rise in absorption. It works by slowing the enzymes that clear curcumin, which means it can also slow the clearance of medicines, so it raises interaction risk along with absorption.
Is curcumin the same as turmeric?
No. Turmeric is the whole dried root of Curcuma longa, and curcumin is one compound taken from it. Curcuminoids make up only about two to nine per cent of the dried root, and curcumin is roughly three-quarters of that. A curcumin supplement is a concentrate, not a spice, and the two are listed separately on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1).
Does better absorbed mean it works better?
Not necessarily, and this is a real gap in the evidence. In the phytosome study that measured 29 times higher absorption, only broken-down forms of curcumin could be detected, at levels below what most proposed effects need. A six-week trial of highly absorbed micellar curcuminoids found they built up in the blood safely but didn't change blood fats or inflammation markers.
