What is honey used for?
Honey is a natural sweetener and a classic for night-time coughs, because a spoonful coats and soothes the throat. It's been a cough favourite for generations. Choose from everyday table honeys to graded Manuka, Jarrah and Leatherwood.

Is Honey right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does honey actually help a cough?
For children, yes, a little. A Cochrane review of six trials in 899 children found honey eased cough symptoms compared with no treatment and with placebo, on moderate-certainty evidence. It worked no better than dextromethorphan. In adults the evidence is weaker: a trial of 194 people found honey no better than usual care for acute bronchitis.
Why can't babies have honey?
Honey can carry spores of Clostridium botulinum, which a baby's gut can't handle in the first year. That causes infant botulism, which is serious. Australian law requires every honey medicine taken by mouth to carry the warning "Not suitable for infants under the age of twelve months". The same applies to honey as a food.
Is Manuka worth choosing over ordinary honey?
It depends on what you want it for. Manuka is sold with a measured number (MGO or UMF) that reflects methylglyoxal activity, which doesn't fade the way ordinary honey's activity does. For soothing a cough, it's the coating that matters, and any honey does that. If you want a graded antibacterial honey, that number is what you're choosing it for.
