What is collagen protein used for?
Collagen protein is the protein people choose when their knees ache after exercise. It's rich in glycine and proline, the building blocks of connective tissue.

Common questions
Is collagen protein the same as the protein powder in the sports aisle?
It sits on the same shelf, but it's a different material. Whey, soy and pea are complete proteins, with every essential amino acid in useful amounts. Collagen isn't. It has no tryptophan and very little leucine, the amino acid that switches on muscle building, so whey does that job far better. Instead, collagen is rich in glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, the amino acids connective tissue is built from. Joints and tendons are where its evidence sits, and the skin research is still debated.
Why does the label say hydrolysed collagen rather than collagen?
Because hydrolysed collagen has been cut into shorter peptides, and that's how Australian rules name it. Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) has COLLAGEN as item 1536 and HYDROLYSED COLLAGEN as item 2624, with gelatin and hydrolysed gelatin listed separately. None of the four has a condition, warning or cap. Most collagen powders are sold as foods anyway, so look for an AUST L number on the pack if you want to know which set of rules applies.
