What is boswellia?

Boswellia is the resin of the frankincense tree, made into a modern herbal extract. It's sold as Boswellia serrata or Boswellia carterii on its own or blended with other herbs, and you'll find it in our joint and mobility range.

Is Boswellia right for you?

Common questions

Is boswellia the same thing as frankincense?

Yes. Boswellia is the tree, and frankincense is the resin it produces. Supplements use an extract of that resin, usually from Boswellia serrata or Boswellia carterii. The species should be named on the label, so check it if you're comparing products.

Is boswellia allowed in Australian supplements?

Yes. Boswellia carterii and Boswellia serrata are both permitted ingredients in listed medicines (items 935 and 936 on Australia's permitted ingredients list, Schedule 1). Neither has a dose cap or a required warning. That's a legal status, though, not a government endorsement.

The evidence, and its limits

The Australian rules

Boswellia carterii (item 935) and Boswellia serrata (item 936) are both on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1, Determination No. 2 of 2026), and Boswellia thurifera is also allowed. That means each can legally go into a listed (AUST L) medicine, with no dose cap, route limits or warning statement recorded. Being allowed isn't the government endorsing any product, and we found no approved claim wording specific to boswellia.
