Elevit Breastfeeding Supplements

Iodine intake for breastfeeding women is set at 270 micrograms a day, the highest of any life stage. Breastfeeding formulas generally carry more iodine and vitamin A, and less iron and folate, than a pregnancy formula. Supply itself responds to feeding, not supplements.

Breastfeeding Supplements Information

What changes after the birth

Nutrient requirements do not return to baseline when a pregnancy ends. The NHMRC sets iodine intake for breastfeeding women at 270 micrograms a day, the highest of any life stage, because iodine passes into breast milk and is needed for the infant's thyroid and neurological development. Demand for iron, choline, DHA and vitamin D also stays elevated while you are feeding, and vitamin B12 matters particularly if you eat little or no animal food.

Whether you personally need a supplement depends on your diet, your blood results and how long you intend to feed. That is a conversation for your GP, midwife or lactation consultant, not something a collection page can answer.

Prenatal formula or breastfeeding formula

Breastfeeding formulas generally carry more iodine and vitamin A, and less iron and folate, than a pregnancy formula, matching the way requirements shift after birth. Several products are built to cover both stages so you do not have to switch mid-way: Blackmores Pregnancy and Breastfeeding, NaturoBest Prenatal Trimester 2 and 3 Plus Breastfeeding, and Ethical Nutrients Inner Health Pregnancy and Breastfeeding all sit in that group. Elevit Breastfeeding and Herbs of Gold Breastfeeding Support are formulated for the postnatal stage specifically.

Lactation herbs and cookies: what the evidence supports

Fenugreek, blessed thistle and fennel have a long traditional use as galactagogues, and lactation biscuits from Franjos Kitchen and The Monday Food Co. are built around oats, brewer's yeast and flaxseed. We are going to be straight about the evidence: it is limited and inconsistent. Some small trials report an increase in expressed volume, others find no difference against placebo.

What is well established is that supply responds to how often and how completely milk is removed. If supply is the concern, a lactation consultant will move the needle further than any product on this page. Herbs are worth trying alongside that, not instead of it.

Probiotics are strain-specific

Effects attach to individual strains, not to probiotics as a category, so the strain code on the label is the thing to read. Qiara Pregnancy and Breastfeeding uses Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716, a strain originally isolated from human breast milk and studied in relation to mastitis. Life Space and Perdays use different strain combinations. Comparing them by organism count alone tells you very little. The wider probiotic range lists strains per product.

Where a practitioner changes the answer

Two things our practitioners see most in this category. The first is women still taking a pregnancy formula months after birth, when the iodine and iron balance has changed. The second is a supplement bought to fix supply, when supply is a feeding-pattern question that a lactation consultant will answer far better than a product will.

We will say plainly when the answer is not a supplement. Mr Vitamins has been trading since 1992 with practitioners on the floor, and the conversation is free: book a 10-minute phone consultation, or read who you will be speaking to on our practitioners page. Your GP, midwife or lactation consultant stays the first call on anything clinical.

Check before you start

Many nutrients and some plant constituents pass into breast milk. Products formulated and labelled for breastfeeding are the safer starting point, but check with your GP, midwife or lactation consultant before adding anything, particularly herbal products, and especially if your baby was premature or has a health condition. Our practitioners can help you frame the questions: book a free 10-minute phone consultation.
