Ferrum Phos

What is Ferrum Phos traditionally used for?

In the tissue salt tradition, Ferrum Phos is the one people reach for at the very first stage of feeling unwell. It's tissue salt No. 4, iron phosphate made up at 6X, one of the twelve Schuessler tissue salts.

Is this the right tissue salts for you?

People often ask about Ferrum Phos at the first sign of something coming on. These are the questions our naturopaths ask in store before you buy.

A good fit if

  • You follow the tissue salt tradition and No. 4 is the salt you're after
  • You understand it's a traditional use, and that no trial of Ferrum Phos itself has been run
  • You want something very low-risk alongside rest, fluids and the basics

Check with us first if

  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding. There's no specific evidence either way.
  • It's for a child. There's no safety data for tissue salts in children.
  • You avoid lactose, which is the usual tablet base, or you're managing blood sugar or tooth decay, as some tablets use sucrose.
  • You take prescription medicine. No interactions with a 6X tissue salt have been found, but it's worth checking.

How the forms compare

  • Ferrum Phos 6X tablets. Best known for: The standard retail form, at the potency Schüssler used. Absorption: Not applicable; there's no nutritional iron dose to absorb. Typical use: Dissolved on the tongue, following the pack directions.
  • Spray or liquid tissue salts. Best known for: A water, ethanol or glycerol base instead of a lactose tablet. Absorption: Not applicable at 6X. Typical use: For people avoiding lactose, where a Ferrum Phos liquid is available.
  • Combination tissue salt formulas. Best known for: Several salts in one tablet, sold for a named concern. Absorption: Not applicable at 6X. Typical use: Whatever that product's own AUST L claim says.
  • Higher potencies (12X, 30C and similar). Best known for: More dilution steps than the 6X Schüssler used. Absorption: Not applicable. Typical use: Individual homoeopathic prescribing, outside the tissue salt system.
  • A nutritional iron supplement instead. Best known for: A measured milligram dose, capped at 24 mg of iron a day when it's the active ingredient. Absorption: Well studied; real iron reduces tiredness in adults low in iron. Typical use: When a blood test has confirmed you actually need iron.

Common questions

Is Ferrum Phos a good iron supplement?

No. Australian law allows ferric phosphate only for homoeopathic use, in the words "Only for use as an active homoeopathic ingredient." The separate iron phosphate ingredient that can be used as a supplement must carry "Not for the treatment of iron deficiency conditions." If you think your iron is low, get a blood test rather than reaching for a tissue salt.

What's Ferrum Phos traditionally used for?

In the system Schüssler published in the late 1800s, Ferrum Phos was his salt for the first stage of illness, before things had properly set in. That's tradition, not research: no trial of Ferrum Phos itself has been run. The one tissue salt tested at the 6X strength that's sold, Kali Phos, showed no effect compared with a placebo.

Is Ferrum Phos safe?

In homeopathy trials, side effects generally happen at the same rate as with a placebo, and nearly all are mild. The real risk with Ferrum Phos is using it instead of having low iron properly diagnosed, which needs a blood test and a measured dose, not a 6X tablet.

How much, and when

Reference values. Iron has its own NHMRC intake target, but it doesn't apply here. A 6X tablet adds nothing meaningful to your iron intake.

Typical supplemental range. Schüssler's own approach, which Australian packs still follow, was the sixth decimal dilution. In his words: "In my practice I generally use the 6th decimal trituration." Directions vary by brand, so follow the label on your pack.

Upper level. Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) sets no daily limit for ferric phosphate used homoeopathically. The 24 mg a day iron limit belongs to the separate iron phosphate ingredient used for nutrition, not to a 6X tablet.

Worth knowing. If you think your iron is low, a blood test is the way to find out, not a tissue salt. What you need depends on your age, diet and health, so talk to one of our naturopaths.

Food sources

The register deliberately doesn't pair tissue salts with food, because doing so implies the tablet supplies the nutrient. The iron your body actually uses comes from food and, where needed, from a nutritional supplement, not from Ferrum Phos.

Before you start

If any of these sound like you, talk to one of our naturopaths or your doctor before you start.

  • If you think your iron is low. Get a blood test rather than treating yourself with a tissue salt.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding. We found no specific evidence.
  • Children. There's no safety data for tissue salts in children.
  • Avoiding lactose. Homoeopathic tablets are made by repeatedly grinding the remedy into lactose.
  • Managing blood glucose or tooth decay. Some homoeopathic tablets contain sucrose (sugar).
  • If you take prescription medicines, check with your doctor, pharmacist or one of our naturopaths before you start.

The evidence, and its limits

  • Tradition uses Ferrum Phos for the first stage of illness; reviews find no homoeopathic remedy beats placebo. (DOI record)
  • Ferrum Phos was Schüssler's salt for the earliest stage of illness, before other remedies took over. (Internet Archive / US National Library of Medicine digitised)
  • Ferric phosphate, Schedule 1 item 2197, is allowed in Australia only for homoeopathic use, not as an iron supplement. (Schedule 1, item 2197)
  • No clinical trial of Ferrum Phos itself exists; the one tissue salt tested at 6X, Kali Phos, found no effect. (DOI record)
  • Real iron treatment reduces tiredness in adults low in iron, an effect a 6X tablet doesn't have. (DOI record)
  • In 41 homoeopathy trials, side effects were no more common than in control groups (OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.86 to 1.14). (DOI record)

How it works

In Schüssler's system, each tissue salt was matched to a mineral he believed your cells needed at a particular stage of illness. Ferrum Phos was his salt for the first stage, before more specific symptoms appear. That comes from tradition, not research: no trial of Ferrum Phos itself has been run. The one tissue salt tested at the strength actually sold is Kali Phos, and that trial found no effect. Think of the name as its place in the system, not a dose of a nutrient. At 6X, the sixth step of diluting one part in ten, there's no meaningful amount of iron phosphate left for nutrition.

The Australian rules

Ferric phosphate is item 2197 on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1), and it's allowed for homoeopathic use only. The condition reads 'Only for use as an active homoeopathic ingredient.' Ferrosoferric phosphate (item 2200) has the same restriction. That's a different ingredient from ferrous phosphate octahydrate (item 2206), which can be a nutritional active but must carry the warning 'Not for the treatment of iron deficiency conditions' and is capped at 24 mg of iron a day. There's no approved claim wording specifically for Ferrum Phos, so this guide relies on traditional use, not an approved claim. Being allowed isn't the government endorsing any product, and it says nothing about whether the product works.

Read the instrument: Schedule 1, item 2197.
