Bee pollen is the pollen bees carry home, dried and sold as it comes. Stir the golden granules through yoghurt, porridge or a smoothie, or choose capsules if you'd rather not taste it.

What's the difference between bee pollen granules and capsules?

It's the same thing, packaged two ways. Granules are the loose pollen pellets, so you can see what you're getting and stir them through food. Capsules hold the same pollen in a shell you swallow, which is what people choose when they'd rather not taste it. Neither is a different ingredient, so choose by how you'd like to take it.

Is bee pollen regulated as a medicine in Australia?

We couldn't find bee pollen on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1), or a permitted health claim for it. That suggests it's sold as a food rather than a listed medicine, which is how loose granules are usually sold. Australian rules do require any medicine containing pollen to warn that it can cause severe allergic reactions. Bee pollen is also often blended into greens powders, so check what's already in your cupboard before you double up.

The evidence, and its limits

The Australian rules

We found no entry for bee pollen, or for Apis mellifera, as a named substance on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1, Determination No. 2 of 2026). Not being on Schedule 1 doesn't mean it's banned. It usually means the product is sold and regulated as a food, which is how a tub of loose granules reaches the shelf, or that it's listed under a different pollen-source name from the ones we checked. The rules do include a label warning for POLLEN: a medicine containing pollen as an ingredient must warn that it can cause severe allergic reactions. So pollen is recognised in at least some listed medicines, even though we didn't find a dedicated bee pollen entry. Whether bee pollen is listed under another name, or is food-only, still needs confirming directly with the TGA or the ARTG. Being allowed isn't the government endorsing a product.
