Is Rolled Oats right for you?
Common questions
Some of these oats say wheat free. Does that mean gluten free?
No. Wheat free means no wheat, which isn't the same as no gluten. Oats have gluten of their own. Food Standards Australia New Zealand requires oats to be declared on the label when they contain it, using the word "gluten" in the allergen summary. Australia's permitted ingredients list also names gluten as a required part of oat. So read the allergen summary on the pack, not the front label.
What's the difference between rolled oats and oat groats?
Groats are the whole oat kernel, sold as it is. Rolled oats are those same groats, steamed and then flattened into flakes, which is why they come out of the bag as thin discs rather than hard little grains. It's the same grain in both bags, and the steaming and rolling is the only difference.
