Shilajit
What is shilajit?
Shilajit is a sticky, tar-like resin that seeps out of rock high in the Himalaya, the Altai and the Caucasus. It's neither plant nor mineral, and you'll find it as raw resin, powder or standardised extracts.

Common questions
Why doesn't this page tell me what shilajit does?
Because in Australia, we legally can't, and we'd rather explain that than talk around it. Shilajit isn't on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1), so it can't be the active ingredient in a listed medicine, and permitted health claims only apply to listed medicines. That leaves no lawful health claim to make. What we can do is tell you what it is, what the research found, and where the gaps are.
Is the research any good?
It's better than you might guess, and thinner than it looks. There are several genuine randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, which is more than many ingredients have. But the strongest one is a bone density result in people diagnosed with osteopenia, the testosterone trial doesn't report how many people took part or how big the effects were, the strength result only held in a subgroup, and the one resin study had no comparison group and everyone knew what they were taking. The 2014 review's conclusion still stands: well-controlled studies using standardised products are needed.
Resin or capsules?
Going by the evidence, they're not the same purchase. Every trial that found anything used purified or standardised material, not the raw resin most of the market sells. The raw resin has one study behind it, with no comparison group and everyone knowing what they took, and those researchers said themselves that the clinical evidence for resin is limited. If the research is why you're buying, choose the format the research used.
What about the "84 minerals" thing?
We can't stand behind it. What we can confirm from our sources is that one lab study measured 14 elements using ICP-MS, a lab method for testing minerals, and the published summary doesn't say which elements or how much of each. The mineral counts on shilajit labels don't trace back to anything we can check. Because it comes out of rock, what's in it is also the reason to ask for test results.
Is it safe?
The trials that tracked side effects found no significant difference from placebo, over periods of up to 48 weeks. But two things are genuinely unknown. No one has published data on unpurified raw resin, and we found no data at all for pregnancy, breastfeeding, children or medicine interactions. And because shilajit isn't a listed medicine ingredient, no product containing it has been assessed for identity, purity and contaminants under those rules.
