What is grape seed extract?

Grape seed extract is a concentrated extract made from the seeds left over when wine grapes are pressed. Take it as a stand-alone capsule, often standardised to a set percentage, or as part of a wider antioxidant formula.

The evidence, and its limits

The Australian rules

Grape seed extract has no entry of its own on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1, Determination No. 2 of 2026), and proanthocyanidins, its main active compounds, aren't listed by name either. The closest related entry is the whole plant GRAPE, item 2435, allowed for food-additive use only, with no warning statements or dose cap recorded. Not being in Schedule 1 doesn't mean grape seed extract is banned. It means it can't currently be named as the active in an Australian listed (AUST L) medicine under this name, and it's mostly sold here as a herbal supplement rather than a listed medicine ingredient. A company or practitioner would need to confirm the right listing pathway before any grape seed extract product is described as a listed medicine. Even where an ingredient is listed, that isn't the government endorsing any product.
