What is sage studied for?
A blend of two sage species has been studied for working memory, the part of your mind that holds a number while you hunt for a pen. Sage is the grey-green garden herb you cook with, also sold as tea, capsules and extracts.

Is Sage right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does sage actually help memory?
One 94-person double-blind trial says yes, on a narrow measure. Working memory and accuracy tasks improved two hours after a single dose and again after 29 days. Two things are worth knowing: the capsule blended two sage species rather than testing one, and the published summary doesn't report how big the effects were.
Does sage help hot flushes and night sweats?
Honestly, we couldn't find a randomised trial of sage for either. Australia does permit that wording, and sage has a long reputation for it, but the only supporting source we found is a general review that lists sage among eighteen plants, with no figures. We'd rather tell you that than suggest more.
What's thujone, and should I worry about it?
It's a compound found naturally in sage. Australian rules make it a required part of four sage ingredients, which means it has to be measured in the finished medicine and kept under 4%. That's a good reason to buy a listed Australian product. None of the research we've reviewed describes what thujone does, so we won't guess.
My label says Salvia lavandulaefolia, not officinalis. Is that sage?
It's Spanish sage, a different species sold under the same common name. Australia permits it with no conditions at all, including no thujone limit. It supplied the terpenoid half of the memory trial blend. Two other labels to watch for: Salvia miltiorrhiza is danshen, and Salvia hispanica is chia.
