Thyme
What is thyme used for?
Thyme is used for chesty coughs when it's blended with ivy leaf or primrose root, a pairing with strong trial evidence. Choose a syrup or tablet that pairs thyme with one of those herbs, just like the products that were tested.

Is Thyme right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does thyme help a cough?
Blended with ivy leaf or primrose root, yes, and the evidence is good. Two double-blind trials of 361 people each found about two-thirds fewer daytime coughing fits, compared with about half on placebo, and people reached the halfway mark two days sooner. Keep in mind that both trials used a two-herb blend. We couldn't find a trial of thyme on its own.
Will thyme tea do the same job?
We can't tell you it will. We didn't find any trial of thyme tea, and the cough trials used measured extracts in specific syrups and tablets, always blended with ivy leaf or primrose root. A cup of thyme tea is lovely, but it isn't the product the evidence is about.
Is thyme essential oil safe to have at home?
Diluted, it's an everyday aromatherapy oil. Concentrated oil is different. Above 50% strength, Australian rules require a bottle of 25 mL or less, a restricted flow insert and a keep out of reach of children warning, because it's a poisoning risk for kids. Store it up high, and don't take it as a supplement.
