Description
Nature's Sunshine Psyllium Hulls Combination is a loose fibre powder built on psyllium seed hulls, with hibiscus flowers and licorice root, in a 320 g pack. Psyllium hulls are the outer layer of the Plantago ovata seed and they are mucilaginous, taking up several times their own weight in liquid and holding it, which is what gives the powder its bulk. Stirred into a glass of water or juice, it adds bulking fibre to the day's diet.

Psyllium Husk
What does psyllium husk do?
Psyllium husk is a gentle fibre that soaks up water and turns into a soft gel, making stools bulkier and softer to help keep you regular. It's one of the best-studied fibres there is.

How the forms compare
Common questions
How much water do you need to take with psyllium husk?
The European Medicines Agency monograph says about 30 mL of liquid per gram of husk, so a 10 g dose needs roughly 300 mL, which is a full glass. Australian labels say the same thing in plainer words. Taken with too little fluid, a bulking fibre can block the throat, oesophagus or bowel, so the water really matters.
Is psyllium husk soluble or insoluble fibre?
Mostly soluble. Soluble fibre soaks up water like a sponge and slows digestion, while insoluble fibre doesn't absorb water and speeds things through. Psyllium is unusual because it does both jobs: the gel bulks stools out and softens them at once. Only 15 to 25 per cent of it is fermentable, so it causes fairly little gas.
Does psyllium husk stop your medicines working?
It can slow their absorption if you take them at the same time. The EMA monograph names minerals, vitamin B12, cardiac glycosides, coumarin anticoagulants, carbamazepine and lithium, and advises taking psyllium at least half an hour to an hour away from other medicines. If you take diabetes or thyroid medicine, you need medical supervision rather than managing it yourself.
Why has psyllium husk become popular again?
Two reasons. Most people eat well below the Australian fibre Adequate Intake of 25 to 30 g a day, and psyllium is an easy way to close the gap. Interest in feeling full and managing appetite has also brought thick, gel-forming fibres back into the conversation, although pooled trial results show no significant change in BMI or waist size.
