What does astaxanthin do?
In pooled trials, astaxanthin helped skin hold moisture and stay more elastic. It comes from a red microalga, and the skin trials used low doses, so a smaller capsule fits the research well.

Is Astaxanthin right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Why do Australian astaxanthin products stop at 12 mg when I've seen 20 mg overseas?
Because Australian law caps it. A listed medicine here can't contain more than 12 mg of astaxanthin in its maximum daily dose, and overseas products don't have to follow that. It isn't a reason to buy a bigger dose elsewhere, though. The skin trials used 2 to 6 mg a day, so for skin, a smaller capsule is closer to the research than a larger one.
Can I take astaxanthin instead of sunscreen?
No, never. One small trial of 23 people measured how quickly skin reddened under a lamp, which is a lab measure, not sun protection. Sun protection claims in Australia are only allowed for sunscreen products, and a capsule isn't one. Whatever you take by mouth, keep wearing sunscreen as you normally would.
Can I just eat salmon instead?
You can get some from food, and it's a fair question. A 150 g fillet of wild sockeye salmon has roughly 4 to 6 mg, which is close to a 4 mg capsule. Farmed Atlantic salmon has about a quarter of that. Those figures are worked out from per-kilo measurements rather than measured per serve, so treat them as a guide.
