Description
Lifestream Spirulina Blue Extra is a tablet pressed from certified organic spirulina, Arthrospira platensis, chosen for its phycocyanin, the blue pigment that gives the tablet its colour and the product its name. Each tablet carries 498.5 mg of spirulina powder providing 94.72 mg of phycocyanin, with a natural vanilla powder for taste. The alga is grown in mineral rich water away from pollution and is non-GMO. The formulation changed in 2023 when titanium dioxide came out, so the tablet is now a darker, more opaque blue on the outside and the familiar dark blue green on the inside. The bottle holds 200 tablets, about 33 adult serves, and it was formerly sold as Extra Strength Blue Spirulina Performance. Six tablets make the adult daily serve, which suits anyone who would rather swallow a tablet than mix a green powder into a drink.

Is Spirulina right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Is spirulina actually good for anything measurable?
The most consistent finding is for blood lipids. Across 20 studies in 1,076 adults, it lowered LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides. Weight came down by about 1.85 kg in people with overweight or obesity, though the trials varied a lot. Inflammation markers mostly didn't change. It isn't the cure-all some marketing suggests.
Should I worry about contamination?
It's still an open question in the research. Spirulina is grown in open ponds, and reviews report possible microcystins and other toxins depending on how it's grown. The practical answer is to buy from a supplier that tests each batch and publishes the results. We'd rather tell you that than pretend the question isn't there.
What's the difference between spirulina and chlorella?
They're different organisms with different rules. Spirulina is a blue-green alga (a cyanobacterium) with no special conditions on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1). Chlorella is a green alga that must list iodine as a component, and products taken by mouth are capped below 300 micrograms of iodine a day. If you have a thyroid concern, that difference matters.
