Precautions
Elderberry
What is elderberry used for?
People reach for elderberry when a cold starts, for a shorter, milder cold. Start within about 48 hours of your first symptom, because that's what the positive trials had in common.

Is Elderberry right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does elderberry stop you getting a cold?
No, and the trial most often quoted for it actually failed that exact test. In 312 Australian travellers, 12 people taking elderberry caught a cold compared with 17 on placebo, which wasn't statistically significant. What did reach significance was how many days people were unwell, not how many got sick. Elderberry shouldn't be sold to you as cold prevention.
Elderberry or elderflower. What's the difference?
They're different parts of the same plant, with opposite evidence. The berry has the clinical trials but no European guidance, because the regulator assessed it and couldn't document its traditional use to its own standard. The flower has European guidance, for relief of early cold symptoms in over-12s, but almost no trials behind it.
I've got an elder tree. Can I make my own syrup?
Not unless you know exactly what you're doing. Raw berries, and any leaves, stems or bark, contain compounds that can produce hydrocyanic acid. In one recorded outbreak, eleven people fell ill and eight went to hospital after drinking home-pressed juice made from berries crushed together with leaves and branches. Commercial products are processed to avoid this.
