Lysine
What is lysine?
Lysine is an essential amino acid that people choose for cold sores, found in meat, fish, dairy and beans. It's part of how your body builds collagen, and you can take it as a tablet, capsule or powder.

Is Lysine right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does lysine actually work for cold sores?
The honest answer is that the evidence is mixed, and the dose is what makes the difference. The best-designed trial gave 1,000 mg three times a day for six months and recorded about 2.4 fewer episodes, milder symptoms and faster healing, though nearly half the people in it dropped out, which is a real weakness. Another trial using 1,000 mg a day found no change in how often cold sores came back. A 2017 review found the same pattern: under 1 g a day there's not enough evidence, and above 3 g a day there may be fewer outbreaks.
Is one 1,000 mg tablet a day enough?
Probably not, if cold sores are the reason you're taking it. One tablet a day is 1,000 mg, the exact dose that made no difference to outbreaks in a double-blind crossover trial of 65 people. The trial that did find a benefit used 1,000 mg three times a day, and a 2017 review put the useful amount above 3 g a day. That's the main reason lysine also comes as a powder. Talk to your pharmacist, doctor or one of our naturopaths about what's right for you.
Can I take lysine while pregnant, or give it to my teenager?
Ask a health professional first, because neither has been tested. We found no trial of lysine supplements in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and a 2025 systematic review notes that even basic requirement data is thinnest in pregnancy, infancy and adolescence. We found no supplement trial in children either, which matters because some lysine products in Australia are marketed to young people as growth formulas. Australia's rules set no pregnancy warning for lysine, but no warning isn't the same as proof of safety.
