Description
Absolute Essential Clove Bud is a pure single essential oil distilled from the flower bud of the clove tree, Syzygium aromaticum, printed on the pack under its older name, Eugenia caryophyllata. Its aroma is warm, sweet and richly spicy, with real carrying power, so a very little goes a long way in a diffuser or a blend. Key components include eugenol, eugenyl acetate, beta-caryophyllene and alpha-humulene, and it comes in a 10 mL bottle.
Product Strengths

Not suitable for: Anyone with an allergy to the listed ingredients; use during pregnancy; children; internal use of any kind, including any use in the mouth; neat application to the skin; use in or near the eyes.
Ingredients
- 100% pure clove bud essential oil, distilled from the bud. Printed as Eugenia caryophyllata.
Published key components: eugenol, eugenyl acetate, beta-caryophyllene and alpha-humulene.
Suggested Use
Use it in a diffuser or vaporiser, or dilute it into a carrier oil or an unscented base before it goes on the skin. It is for external use only and is not for internal use. Read the full directions on the pack.
Storage
Store the bottle upright with the cap closed, in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. Light and warmth shorten the life of a plant oil.
Warnings
Keep out of reach of children. For external use only. Not for internal use. Avoid contact with the eyes and flush with water if contact occurs. Stop using it if skin irritation or sensitivity develops.
Absolute Essential's own cautions for this oil are: "Not suitable for use during pregnancy. Not recommended for children. Use with care as this oil may cause skin irritations."
Eugenol is a recognised skin sensitiser and an irritant to mucous membranes, and it is the dominant constituent of clove bud oil. Dilute it heavily and keep it away from the mouth, the nose and the eyes.
Disclaimer
For external use only. Keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes. Patch test on a small area of skin before wider topical use. Always read the label and follow the directions for use. This information is general and is not a substitute for advice from a qualified healthcare practitioner.
Allergens
The published constituent list names eugenol. No other fragrance allergen is printed by name for this oil. Always review label for full list of ingredients.

What is clove traditionally used for?
Clove bud oil, dabbed on the tooth, is a long-standing traditional remedy for short-term relief of an aching tooth. It's for temporary relief while you wait to see your dentist.

Is Clove right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does clove oil actually stop toothache?
It has a long documented history. European guidance covers 'temporary relief of toothache due to a dental cavity', and written records of the oil go back to the 15th century. A review of 62 trials on mouth and face pain also named clove among the effective herbal extracts, grouped with eight other plants. It's relief, not repair, and it's for no more than a week.
Can I swallow clove oil, or give it to a teething baby?
No to both. Any medicine with more than 25% clove oil must be labelled 'Not to be taken'. A 7-month-old who swallowed one teaspoon spent four days in hospital with acidosis and reduced consciousness. Two 2-year-olds who drank 5 to 10 mL went into a deep coma with seizures and liver injury. Keep the bottle out of reach.
What's the difference between clove bud oil and clove leaf oil?
Bud oil is distilled from the dried flower bud, and it's the one named in the traditional European guidance. Leaf and stem oils are different distillates with slightly different minor compounds, and they have no traditional guidance or human trials of their own. Australian rules cap all three together at 25% of a medicine, not each one separately.
Will clove help my blood sugar?
The best human evidence says no. A 2024 meta-analysis looked at 12 Mediterranean herbs and spices in people with type 2 diabetes and found improvements in fasting glucose for cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, black cumin and saffron. Clove wasn't one of them. The positive glucose results come from rodents given isolated eugenol, and they haven't carried over to people.
