Supporting your Sensitive Child to thrive, naturally

Supporting your Sensitive Child to thrive, naturally

Sensitive children have sensitive senses. They may feel things deeply, see things that others don’t, hear the tiniest sound that you aren’t even registering, or have an acute sense of taste or smell. Each child has their own unique sensitivity profile, and no one child is the same. When these sensitivities are not acknowledged it can lead to reactions like behavioural issues, health issues, anxiety and more.

Here are 8 tips for nurturing a sensitive child:

1.   Love and accept them the way they are

See your child as unique and special developing in their own time and in their own way. Be careful not to compare with other siblings or people because they will feel it and will be more likely to take on a belief that they are not good enough.

2.   Guide them with boundaries

Children do not develop their full reasoning until their mid twenties so they need boundaries to show that you love and care for them. Use your senses to tune into the boundaries that your child needs. Remember every child is different and there is a balance between too many and too little boundaries.

3.   Feed them FRESH food

Everyone needs fresh fruit and vegetables to keep their brains and bodies fully alive and nourished. And sensitive children need it more than most. Limit the preservatives and colourings as they can play havoc with the body and the brain.

4.   Create a relaxing environment

Play music; have plants around; turn the TV off. Provide a nurturing; calm and connecting environment at home.

5.   Reduce the toxic chemicals in your home

More often than not cleaning products; soaps; shampoos are laden with toxic chemicals and they play havoc with sensitive children’s health and wellbeing. Change to pure essential oil based products.

6.   Take time to really listen to your sensitive child and what they need

As a parent we often direct our children based on what we want for them. Sensitive children often have the answers inside them. We just need to really listen to what they are saying and what they are needing.

7.   Balance their activities and rest time

Ensure they are getting time to relax and be with themselves. This enables them to release the build-up of emotions within them (which is heightened in a sensitive person). If there is not enough time for rest then maybe it’s time to let an activity go.

8.   Look after you

For me this is the most important of all! As you nurture and celebrate yourself so will your child. They learn from watching you through all their senses.
