What is Andropause?
Andropause—also called late-onset hypogonadism—refers to the gradual age-related decline in testosterone levels in men. Unlike female menopause, which typically occurs over a relatively short timeframe, andropause develops slowly over many years.
Testosterone levels in men begin to fall by approximately 1% to 2% per year after the age of 40. However, many men remain within the normal range, and not all experience symptoms. This can make andropause challenging to diagnose without a combination of clinical signs and confirmed low testosterone through blood testing.
In some cases, further testing of the pituitary gland may be needed to rule out other hormonal imbalances or underlying conditions.
How Do You Know If You're Experiencing Andropause?
Because the symptoms of andropause can often overlap with aging, medications, and other health conditions, a holistic view of the individual is essential. A qualified practitioner will consider factors such as:
