Andropause: Myth or Reality?

Understanding andropause: the gradual decline in testosterone, its symptoms, and how to support your wellbeing during this phase of life.

Andropause: Myth or Reality?

Hormonal changes are a natural part of aging, but for many men, the effects of declining testosterone can catch them by surprise. Known as andropause, this phase can significantly impact lifestyle, vitality, and overall wellbeing.
Is andropause real, and how can men navigate these changes with awareness and support?

What is Andropause?

Andropause—also called late-onset hypogonadism—refers to the gradual age-related decline in testosterone levels in men. Unlike female menopause, which typically occurs over a relatively short timeframe, andropause develops slowly over many years.

Testosterone levels in men begin to fall by approximately 1% to 2% per year after the age of 40. However, many men remain within the normal range, and not all experience symptoms. This can make andropause challenging to diagnose without a combination of clinical signs and confirmed low testosterone through blood testing.
In some cases, further testing of the pituitary gland may be needed to rule out other hormonal imbalances or underlying conditions.

How Do You Know If You're Experiencing Andropause?

Because the symptoms of andropause can often overlap with aging, medications, and other health conditions, a holistic view of the individual is essential. A qualified practitioner will consider factors such as:
  • Age and weight
  • Medications
  • Sleep quality
  • Diet and nutrition
  • Stress levels and adrenal health
  • Physical activity and lifestyle habits
This broader approach ensures that any recommendations—whether herbal, nutritional, or supplemental—are tailored to the individual.

Common Signs & Symptoms of Andropause

  • Decreased lean muscle mass and strength
  • Lowered libido and sexual activity
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Reduced bone density and increased fracture risk
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Mood changes and cognitive shifts
  • Breast tenderness or swelling
  • Fertility issues

Natural Support for Andropause

The good news? There are natural, supportive strategies men can adopt to ease the effects of andropause and enhance their vitality.

Nutrition & Supplements

As a nutritionist and herbalist, I recommend:
  • High-quality protein supplementation alongside regular strength training to support muscle mass,
  • Calcium-rich foods and Vitamin D for bone support,
  • Zinc-rich foods or supplement with Orthoplex Zinc Citrate to support testosterone production and testicular function.

Support Adrenal and Optimal Hormonal Function

The adrenal glands are often overworked and fatigued due to chronic stress, excess caffeine intake and nutrient depletion. The adrenals produce small amounts of testosterone, so supporting your adrenal glands is key.

My go-to:

"Supports stress resilience and endocrine balance."
"A traditional herb shown to boost testosterone in men with low baseline levels."
"DAA is a naturally occurring amino acid that supports testosterone synthesis in the pituitary and testes."

Sleep & Recovery

Poor sleep can drastically affect hormone production. Prioritise good sleep hygiene and address issues like sleep apnoea, which is common in midlife men.

Reflexology for Hormonal Balance

As a Clinical Reflexologist, I work with key reflex points on the feet including the pituitary gland, adrenal glands, and testes. Reflexology supports balance within the endocrine, nervous, and glandular systems and can help restore internal equilibrium.
