Methionine

What is methionine?

Methionine is an essential amino acid, so your body can't make it and it has to come from your diet. You'll usually get it from protein foods like meat, fish or eggs.

Is Methionine right for you?

Common questions

Is methionine the same thing as SAMe?

No, even though the names sound related. SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) is a different substance with its own separate listing under Australian rules. This page covers plain methionine, the free amino acid, which is a permitted ingredient in its own right. If it's SAMe you're after, ask us, as that's a different product.

Is methionine regulated as a medicine in Australia?

Methionine, the free amino acid, is a permitted ingredient in listed medicines (item 3283 on Australia's permitted ingredients list), with no dose cap or warning statement attached. No permitted health claim specific to methionine has been confirmed yet, so there's no set wording for what a product can say it does. It's also an everyday amino acid in food, so it can appear in foods with no medicine listing at all.

The evidence, and its limits

The Australian rules

Methionine, the free amino acid, is item 3283 on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1, Determination No. 2 of 2026), allowed in listed medicines. No specific requirements, warning statement or dose cap are recorded against it. We found no permitted indication naming methionine, though only Parts 1 to 5 of 17 had been checked at the time, so that isn't a final answer. Related substances made from methionine, such as S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) salts, have their own Schedule 1 entries and aren't covered by this one. Because methionine is also an ordinary amino acid in food, it can lawfully appear in food products with no therapeutic listing at all; having no therapeutic claim doesn't mean it's restricted. We found no TGA safety advisory for methionine. Being allowed isn't the government endorsing any product or claim.

Read the instrument: Schedule 1, item 3283.
