Rolled Oats

Wholesome oats for porridge, muesli and baking.

Rolled oats are whole oats, steamed and rolled into flakes. Choose traditional, quick, instant, organic or wheat-free, depending on how much time you have in the morning.

Is Rolled Oats right for you?

Common questions

Some of these oats say wheat free. Does that mean gluten free?

No. Wheat free means no wheat, which isn't the same as no gluten. Oats have gluten of their own. Food Standards Australia New Zealand requires oats to be declared on the label when they contain it, using the word "gluten" in the allergen summary. Australia's permitted ingredients list also names gluten as a required part of oat. So read the allergen summary on the pack, not the front label.

What's the difference between rolled oats and oat groats?

Groats are the whole oat kernel, sold as it is. Rolled oats are those same groats, steamed and then flattened into flakes, which is why they come out of the bag as thin discs rather than hard little grains. It's the same grain in both bags, and the steaming and rolling is the only difference.

The evidence, and its limits

The Australian rules

Rolled oats don't have an entry in Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1, Determination No. 2 of 2026). That isn't a ban: rolled oats are legally sold and eaten as a food, which puts them under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code rather than the medicines rules, so a Schedule 1 entry isn't what governs them. The oat plant does have entries for use in listed medicines: OAT at item 3526, allowed only as a homoeopathic active or inactive ingredient, OAT BRAN at item 3527 as an inactive ingredient, OATMEAL COLLOIDAL at item 3528, and AVENA SATIVA at item 745. Every one of them must declare gluten unless it's applied to the skin or mucous membranes. There's no permitted health claim specific to oats, so nothing in the rules makes rolled oats a therapeutic ingredient, and being sold legally isn't the government endorsing a product.

Read the instrument: Schedule 1, item 3526.
