Spirulina has been recognised by many different cultures over the centuries as a protein rich nutritional dense whole food. The ancient Aztecs in the sixteenth century collected it in fine nets and made it into a blue green cake. It continues to be harvested and consumed by the Kanebu population living along the shores of lake Chad in East Africa.
