Drink to your health - with Grapeseed

Drink to your health - with Grapeseed
  • Health advice
  • Mar 22, 2016
We often hear about the benefits of drinking red wine, but what about the Grapeseed that is thrown away when the grapes are crushed? It appears that the the seeds of the grape may be more beneficial than the juice!

Why specifically the Grape Seed?

This seed exract is attracting attention in the health world for its possible effects on improving a range of conditions including:
  • Poor circulation
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Hardening of the arteries
  • Swelling after injury
  • Macular degeneration
Wine and grapes have been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. Greek, Roman and French healers used grapes, grapeseed, leaves, sap and vines as food, drink and for ailments ranging from sore throats to skin diseases, eye infections, nausea and to stop bleeding.

Who can use Grapeseed and why?

Popular among women with vein concerns and also people with circulation problems as it has been shown to assist with chronic venous insufficiency; a condition in which veins in the legs have difficulty sending blood back to the heart. It may also be beneficial for people who have suffered an injury or as a post-operative support, as it seems to be beneficial for reducing swelling in such circumstances. Studies conducted in 2009 demonstrated grapeseed extract to significantly improve markers of inflammation and glycaemia suggesting it may be useful for diabetic patients. Other research in the same year demonstrated a marked reduction in blood pressure for patients at risk of cardio related illnesses.

What is it about Grapeseed that works?

Like so many natural remedies, it appears to be a concentrated source of antioxidants and thus may be useful in preventing or reducing the effects of a range of modern day illnesses. High antioxidant activity fighting free radicals and free radical damage in the body is frequently associated with improved cardio health and by extension improvements in complications arising from type 2 diabetes.

Is it too early to raise a toast to Grapeseed for other conditions?

American research is currently being conducted on the effect of Grapeseed in improving outcomes for many serious illnesses, including the prevention of cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease. Time and further research will tell if we can celebrate Grapeseed for this type of breakthrough, but in the short term, there is still good reason to raise your glass – of water – and try some grapeseed extract to improve a host of health issues.
