- Product Overview
Linseeds are full of fibre, phytoestrogens and omega-3 fats, but all of these valuable nutrients are locked beneath the seeds’ shiny coating. We grind the seeds for you so you can absorb the nutrients more easily, and to make them easy and convenient to use every day.
Linseeds and linseed meal are high in fibre, so they can help keep you regular and support your bowel health. Up to a third of the fibre is in the soluble form that has known benefits for cholesterol and blood sugar balance.
Fibre compounds called lignans are also present in large quantities. In fact, linseeds and linseed meal are the richest known dietary source of this class of phytoestrogens, which can bind to oestrogen receptors in the body and help offset some of the negative health effects of high levels of circulating oestrogen. This leads to the popular use of linseeds and linseed meal to help relieve hot flushes and other symptoms of menopause.
A diet containing large amounts of lignans may also help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2009, researchers collated the data from 28 studies involving more than 1500 people, and concluded that linseeds and the lignans they contain have the ability to lower total and LDL-cholesterol. The effects appear to be more significant in women than men (especially post-menopausal women), and in people whose cholesterol levels are elevated to start with. However more research will be needed before these points can be confirmed.
Sprinkle a tablespoonful of over your breakfast cereal or porridge, stir it into yoghurt, or blend it into a smoothie or fresh fruit juice.
Add to recipes for bread, muffins, cookies and other baked goods.
For optimal absorption of the precious omega-3 fats in linseed, we recommend NutriVital Good for You Organic Flaxseed Oil.
