Chia is a delicious seed from South America that was eaten by the Aztecs and Mayans thousands of years ago and is still a highly nutritious food to include in your daily diet today.
Chia seeds are extremely nutritious, providing protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and antioxidants.
They provide almost 3 grams of omega-3 fats per 15 gram serve, making them a rare rich vegetarian source of these important essential fatty acids, which support heart, blood vessel, joint, eye and brain health. They also contain omega-6 fats, which have benefits for the skin.
Chia seeds contain a combination of soluble and insoluble fibre. Each 15 gram serve provides 6.2 g grams of fibre. Soluble fibre may help to maintain normal healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels, while insoluble fibre helps maintain bowel function and regularity.
Unlike many other vegetarian sources of protein, chia seeds contain all eight essential amino acids.
Take 15 grams (1 level tablespoon) per day.
The mild flavour of chia seeds means they can be added to a wide variety of food and drinks. Try sprinkling them over cereal, porridge or salad or adding them to baked goods such as bread, muffins and cookies.
Alternatively, stir a tablespoonful of chia seeds into a cup of water to form a gel, and add it to smoothies, juices, tea or yoghurt.
