It is now recognised that one in seven people suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Their symptoms vary from diarrhoea and constipation, bloating and abdominal pain, indigestion, heartburn and many other symptoms. Identifying single foods can be done with Food Detective and identifying Food Groups can be done by completing a FODMAPs challenge/trial. This requires removing carbohydrate foods under the groups of fermentable, oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols. These foods are generally poorly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. Through a series of stages, the exact group or groups can usually be identified and an appropriate diet can be tailored to suit the individual. Having completed the challenge/trial and identified which foods to avoid, knowing which foods should be avoided often can become frustrating.
