How anti-inflammatory Evening Primrose Oil can help your joints

How anti-inflammatory Evening Primrose Oil can help your joints

  • Jan 29, 2017
Have you tried the benefits of fish oil and Omega 3 for your joints but still feel that you need a bit of a ‘kick’ start? Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) could be a good addition to your supplement routine.

EPO is not just another poly unsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)

What makes EPO so different from other PUFA’s is that EPO contains the additional Omega 6 fatty acid Gamma-linolenic-acid (GLA). GLA is the anti-inflammatory Omega 6 fatty acid and it show great results for reducing inflammation; GLA is what gives EPO many of its medicinal qualities including being an anti-inflammatory. Traditionally EPO with its active ingredient GLA, has been beneficial for joint conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis because it helps to regulate your immune system (rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease) and fight joint inflammation at a local level.

The science behind EPO's anti-inflammatory benefits

Once absorbed into your system, GLA is further metabolisined to di-homogamma linolenic acid (DGLA) which goes through another metabolic process in your body using the enzymes cyclooxygenases and lipoxygenases to produce anti-inflammatory eicosanoids (prostaglandins of series 1 and leukotrienes of series 3). What this basically means is that EPO and its active GLA can really make a difference when it comes to inflammation. These anti-inflammatory compounds help with decreasing inflammation and also compete with pro-inflammatory (pain and swelling-causing) prostaglandins and leukotrienes.

Less pain and swelling means greater mobility

What does this mean for your joints? Well less painful, swollen joints and more joint mobility and movement because the anti-inflammatory compound GLA competes with the bad inflammation causing compounds.

So, the more GLA the better!

Due to all of its amazing anti-inflammatory properties, EPO has been used beneficially in the management of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and other inflammatory based conditions including PMS. The special properties of EPO make it a very useful oil for inflammation. Why not shake up your supplement routine today and add in some EPO in with your fish oil and get more of the good oils in your life.
