Choice is an interesting possibility when it comes to your own healthcare. Do I choose pharmaceutical medicine prescribed by my doctor or look for something more natural from the plant and animal kingdoms? Something that is, in fact, a food that will nourish my body and allow it to produce what it needs to be healthier.
Whilst not advocating that you drop your prescribed medications, perhaps there is something that can work really well along side them? Then once you experience an improvement, you can work with your doctor or healthcare practitioner to reduce or eliminate those drugs.
So what are the choices for Arthritis?
There are a number of things which can help and which are not purely pain relief medication but products that may be able to reverse some of the damage to your joints caused by wear and tear.
Useful Supplements for Arthritis
As we age, our body’s own ability to produce the substances we need to replace cartilage, lessens and we may begin to experience the painful and swollen joints that are typical with Osteoarthritis. Glucosamine and Chondroitin are two of these substances, and when taken together as supplements, are used by our bodies to help rebuild that cartilage – thus reducing pain and increasing mobility. Furthermore taking these does not interfere with anti-arthritis drugs you may be using.
Glucosamine comes in several forms one of which is Glucosamine hydrochloride. This is produced from corn, and has been shown to be better tolerated by people with digestive sensitivities than the more common Glucosamine sulphate, which is derived from shellfish. In addition it is suitable for vegetarians and has both Kosher and Halal approval.
Another supplement of particular interest is MSM or methyl sulphonyl methane. This is an organic sulphur compound which has been shown to significantly reduce arthritic pain when taken over a six-week period.
At a reduction in some cases of more than 80%, some patients were able to reduce their medication, in consultation with their doctor. It also seems to reduce the pain of injury and has been used with success in helping injured athletes return to their sport sooner than would otherwise be the case.
For best results Glucosamine and Chondroitin can be taken with MSM to bring even faster pain relief. The MSM supplement usually comes as a powder for easy assimilation. A typical dosage is recommended at 1500mg of Glucosamine per day with 2000mg of Chondroitin.
