Slippery Elm (14 products)

Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra), is a tree native to the United States and Canada.

The tree is known for its dark brown to reddish brown bark that Native Americans would peel back to reveal the slimy, red inner bark and use it as a remedy for many common ailments, such as fever, wounds and sore throats. Late in the 19th century, a preparation of elm mucilage was officially recognized in the United States Pharmacopoeia.

When the bark is mixed with water, it forms a sticky material known as mucilage, which is therapeutic and soothing to irritated tissue.

Slippery elm bark is commonly prescribed for inflammatory bowel diseases. Taking slippery elm powder can soothe the lining of the stomach and intestines thereby reducing irritation and inflammation.

Slippery elm powder is very soothing for a cough and sore throat. The bark contains mucilage, a sticky mixture of sugars that can’t be broken down by the human digestive tract. The mucilage coats the throat providing a soothing barrier.

Slippery elm is also considered an effective remedy for gastroesophageal reflux and can be taken in water before meals.

Slippery elm supplements are available as slippery elm capsules, slippery elm tablets, slippery elm bark powder and in combination with other digestive healing herbs and nutrients.

Slippery elm powder dosage: 1 – 2 teaspoons can be taken in a glass of water up to 3 times a day.
