Garlic (Allium sativum) contains amino acids, fibre and small amounts vitamins and minerals.  The sought after component is allicin that gives garlic its medicinal properties.  When fresh garlic is crushed, enzyme activity results in allicin being formed. 

 

Garlic extract is helpful in heart disease as it has been shown in studies to lower cholesterol, blood lipids  and blood pressure, protect against atherosclerosis and improving blood flow.

Dosage: fresh 2-5g per day (crush and allow a few minutes to sit before using)  Dried powder .4-1.2g per day.  Garlic supplements should be taken with cold water to avoid garlic odours.  Supplements may cause gastric upset and should not be used with blood thinning medications or in pregnancy.  Normal dietary amounts are able to be used in pregnancy.
