Dong quai (Angelica sinensis) is a herb native to China. Where Ginseng is considered male tonic, this is regarded as the female ginseng. Helpful in a range of menstrual disorders, including irregularity, painful periods, endometriosis. It may also benefit anyone suffering with heart arrythmias, tinnitus, liver disease and constipation associated with age.
Tradition TCM uses of this herb include strengthening heart, lung, liver meridians. It also is said to lubricate the bowel and invigorate the blood. Tissue trauma, swelling, bruising may also benefit from a Dong quai supplement.
Research as shown Dong quai extract to relax uterine contractions supporting its use in menstrual disorders. It is also shown to correct atrial fibrillation, lower blood pressure, reduce blood cholesterol. Due to its stimulating and anti-inflammatory effect on the liver, research supports the use of this herb in chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver.
Available as a single herb, or more frequently in combination with other herbs, Dong quai tea is also a good and gentle way to use Dong quai herb.
