Boswellia (Boswellia serrata) also known as Frankincense. The active component are the boswellic acids that are present in the herb but not in the essential oil. This herb has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It may also be helpful in preventing cartilage loss.
Due to the combination of analgesic and anti-inflammatory actions, the range of conditions that can benefit from boswellia extract include arthritic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. It may help improve joint mobility and reduce swelling associated with mild arthritis. Boswellia complex for arthritis is often in combination with turmeric or curcumin.
Other conditions for which boswellia supplement has been found helpful are inflammatory bowel diseases, gastric ulcers and pain. The herb and the essential oil are both used for infections, wound healing, and varicose veins. The essential oil has been used for asthma and mature skin.
Ayurvedic use of this herb includes bone healing. Where as TCM know this herb to be helpful in menstrual pain. It has been used for fibroids, cysts, and painful periods.
Dosage is 300-400mg of powdered extract (standardised to 20-40% boswellic acids) three times daily. Avoid in allergy to boswellia. Not to be used in pregnancy.
